the problem is the desktop doesnt even recognize itself in the workgroup. My
laptop lists itself and the deskstop. This is a brand new HP 1430n with XP
media center, and  no one is able or willing to solve the problem without
wanting to charge me a fee. I'm ready to just take the thing back to Circuit
City

Try disabling the Windows Firewall temporarily.

What workgroup is setup on the new machine and what on the other two?  If
they're XP Home, they would default to MSHOME.  MCE would default to
WORKGROUP (Yes, I find it annoying too).

I have a new hp also and have the same problem.  If you get it figured out
please let me know, and if i am successful, i will let you know.  It would
seem to me that Hp should help with this but as you said, they want $60 to
help, and I am not sure that they could help anyway.
