which format for Windows Media Center EXTENDER?

 

I have a computer with Windows Media Center XP operating system.   I
also have the Linksys model WMCE54AG Windows Media Center EXTENDER
which is compatible with the XP operating system, not Vista OS.   I
have downloaded TVersity to use to transfer movie files to the
EXTENDER so they can be viewed on a TV set using  a wireless router.
I also have HANDBRAKE software that can convert the downloaded movie
into a format that would be compatible with the EXTENDER.

Now, after all of this, this is my question, which format should I
convert the movie files to?
While file format works best with the EXTENDER?

All opinions, information, dissertations, answers, etc. welcomed!

I'm confused. The Extender you have is a remote viewer for XP MCE. You don't
transfer files to it, you stream media to it. It can accept streams of
anything you could watch at the PC with Media Center. It is designed to log
into the MCE PC as a remote user and basically run a remote session of MCE.

TVersity is a PC based streaming server that seems to support a butt load of
streaming clients. Unfortunately I don't see the WMCE54AG in the list. I do
see the XBOX  media extender, but that is a different animal. Beyond this,
one of the features of TVersity is that it transcodes on the fly, dependent
on the requirements of the client, so I don't get the idea that you need to
pick a format.  What works best with the extender? DVRMS for recorded TV,
MPEG for videos, assuming you could get TVersity to send them to the
extender, or get the extender to attach to TVersity. I don't see that as a
capability noted at the site. Could be wrong.

 

and another question to go with Sven's -- if you have XP MCE and have an XP
Extender, what does Vista have to do with the question?

Hi James:  in communicating on forums, it is harder than using verbal
communication, when questions and answers can go back & forth between
persons asking questions and those providing answers immediately.   To
make it easier and avoid any possible misunderstanding, I spelled out
that the model Media Center Extender is NOT compatible with Vista.
That is why the name Vista appeared in my post.   Best, Aaron

 


True, that posting questions on a forum is usually harder than a two-way
conversation and you do need to be clear, but sometimes too much information
is a problem also -- such as mentioning Vista, Handbrake, TVersity, etc.,

But to get to the questions asked by Sven, there is no transfer of files to
the Extender, it doesn't have any storage capacity. If you are just
wondering what files are supported by MCX (beside the native recorded TV),

As to which to use, it depends on your preference of quality vs size, using
a wireless network is slower than a hardwire, so that could cause issues if
the videos are stored in a very high res. format.
