I tried to boot into safemode and the PC froze, after a repair reinstall
from here;

http://icrontic.com/articles/repair_windows_xp

everything works OK and all data was saved.

The only minor problem I am still having is when booting up I get a screen
asking which OS I want to boot to.

MediaCenter is the only OS installed on this PC.

Is there a solution to this, I figure it had something to do with the
rebuild of the boot.ini file etc.

This was a steep learning curve. LOL. "Google is your friend"

Thanks

Bob

There is an easy way and a harder way to fix that,

If you open boot.ini in WordPad or Notepad, you can change the Default to be
your Windows XP boot and change the timeout= to 0(zero)

The other way is:
To specify the default operating system for startup

1.. Open System in Control Panel.
2.. On the Advanced tab, under Startup and Recovery, click Settings.
3.. Under System startup, in the Default operating system list, click the
operating system you want to start when you turn on or restart your
computer.
4.. Select the Display list of operating systems for check box, and then
type the number of seconds you want the list displayed before the default
operating system starts automatically.
Notes

a.. To open System, click Start, click Control Panel, and then
double-click System.
b.. To manually edit the boot options file, click Edit. Microsoft strongly
recommends that you do not modify the boot options file (boot.ini). Doing so
may render your computer unusable.
