Windows XP Media Center Edition to Profession Upgrade not working

  Hello, I recently purchased a computer last week with windows xp media center
edition installed.  The IT person at my university tried to upgrade me to
windows xp professional so that I could join the university domain (he has a
site liscence for the upgrade disk), but the key didn't work (it works on
other computers with home windows xp home edition installed).  Does anyone
know why this upgrade doesn't work?  Does the upgrade only work from home
edition and not media center?

 Media Center is based on the XP Professional platform, so I would think you
shouldn't need to upgrade at all.

because window med cent is and IS NOT express pro !! because the added
component might interfer with some softwares like my Avid that doesn t want
to capture because:everytime i open my avid xpress prohd i see that nasty
window:
"your current powerscheme toshiba power management may not be optimal for
best performances on the avid editor.capture and digital cut among other
features may be compromised.for improved performence open the power options
control panel and choose the always on power scheme"

it appears everytime i open my avid xpresspro i can t get rid of it because
when i go to control panel/power options:comes a warning saying "to ajust
power manag.settings close microsoft pow options and use toshiba power
management".

the windows power options is not active and allow me to make any changes...

then when i go to toshiba power management  i can t fine the "always on"
power scheme asked by avid but just "full power/normal/longlife...etc'"modes

now in some avid forum i red that :
 XP MCE is not good for is using it in an editing environment!

It runs a few services in the background which can interfere with the
operation of CPU intensive applications:

1. Recorder scheduler
2. Program guide downloader
3. Infrared controller
4. Transcoder for the MCE portable - if you have one

If you are using a laptop that came with XP MCE installed, and you really do
not need to use the additional features of MCE, I would recommend turning off
these additional services using one of the OS utilities like msconfig.exe.

You will have to make certain to patch your MCE up to SP2, unless you have

i am considering buying Xpress Pro, but have concerns about system
requirements. I have a machine running Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005.
Will Xpress Pro work with that?

In the description for the product it states that everything is included in
the box (Including the Win Xp Pro). Does anyone know if that's true?

In short, it is not supported. Note that Brian Williams is an Avid support
engineer. You can (maybe) get it to work by manually shutting down certain
services. If you can't get it to work, please do not come back here and ask
why.

so it s not easy to tell...i think it wont be suported,and i hate that
window MCE that makes me crazy without giving me any avantage since i don t
use it s options and don t even know what they are...
anyone who could help me not to have to buy another 2000$ labtop??

 You will have to clean install, NOT upgrade.

oh thanks ! the first person who gives me an answer to the question!
of course i want to clean install!!! i d like to get rid of all all all any
MCE stuff.
sory for the user of that os...i just don t like it because i don t need
it.and it disturbs the only thing i have that computer for...editing.
