When I try to play a video downloaded to the desktop, I get the following
message: "Windows Media Player encountered unknown error." Does anyone know
how to resolve this problem?

That error message usually means that Windows Media Player does not have
the correct Codec.

K-Lite Codec pack is a good choice. Search in Google.
Many favors of K-Lite, I use the "Full Version"

You can also install and use the other well known player, it plays
nearly everything.
