I just assembled a new computer (all new components) and when I try to
install XP MC it asks for the service pack 2 disk. My Windows didn't come
with this - it came with 2005 updates, but no service pack 2. I downloaded
the XP service pack 2 file from the MS website, extracted it, burned it to
cd, then put it in, but it is still not working. Specifically, it asks for
files such as nt5inf.cat and some others, which I point to on the SP2 disk
that I made, but it says that it can't complete installation, then restarts
installation from the point where it asks if I want to format the drive.
Other info:
- Originally I did the full format of the HD (not quick format)
- I have tried to make a slipstreamed version using the SP2 file and my
Windows, but it says that it can't perform the procedure because the Windows
already has SP2 embedded in it.
- I was going to try to install windows by putting the files on the HD, but
when I get a dos prompt, I can't use the xcopy command to copy whole
directories. I can only use the copy command, but that would require a lot
of typing.
- This is a totally legit version of windows - it's an OEM version I just
bought from Newegg and I have not tried to put it onto another computer or
anything.
Any help would be greatly appreciated - I'm running out of ideas.
Here's what I'm working with:
intel celeron 430
msi p43 neo3-f mainboard
4 gig (2x2Gig) OCZ Pi memory
WD 640 gig HD
LG dvd burner/reader
I can go into bios, all the memory is recognized, etc. My issue seems to be
confined to windows.

Put the first CD in when it asks for the "Windows XP Service Pack 2" disk.

I've tried that and it's not working (I don't remember the exact message, but
I think that it asks for the same thing again). I'm not currently at home
with the computer, but I've tried putting in any of the Windows disks that
came in the package when I'm asked this and none of them fixed the problem.

It has been a long time when I installed MCE 2005.
It’s a little confusing “Windows XP Service Pack 2" is Disk 1.
Install disk1 then disk2 then disk1

i have the same problem, but when i put the first disc back in it
basically starts the install over where it asks to setup my network,
then goes through the loop where it asks for disc 2 then for sp2 disc
again, doesn't matter how many times i complete these steps it is
utterly stuck in this loop, any tips on how to get out of this one?
