Partition Magic tells me I have a partition on my Toshiba Satellite
laptop. It says it is "Type88". When I look through the partition
table, it offers many different types of partitions, but type88 is not
among them. When I look in help, I don't see type88.
This Type88 partition is 251MG. The HD is 80Gig.
Because the Type88 partition is unmovable, according to Partition
Magic, I cannot use the user interface to create a new partition. I
could create a new partition only by manually altering the Partition
Table. I'm afraid--very afraid--of that.
I searched google for Type88 and found only one hit that was relevant.
It was posted back in May, and referred to Toshiba Satellite and
Partition Magic as well. However, since it is in Italian, I am at a
loss to understand it.
The Toshiba Satellite came preloaded with Win XP/MCE. I wonder if
that has anything to do with it.
If someone could help me understand what this partition is, what it
does, then I could decide whether to delete it or not.
I'd really like to partition this 80Gig HD into two smaller
partitions, one for the OS and programs, and another for my data.

This is the "recovery partition" that would be used to restore your =
computer to its "out of box" state, should you need to. Most companies =
include a utility that will allow you to make one bootable CD/DVD set =
from the contents of that partition. Once you've done that, you can =
probably safely delete it.
