I had a registry file failure.  I managed to fix that but now, I have several
pieces of software that either do not run or don't run properly.  These are:

1 -- Windows Media Player.  I downloaded WMP 11 (after downloading the
rollup) and this will not even open.  I get no error message, it just doesn't
work.  WMP 10 didn't either.

2 -- McAfee.  When I click on the icon to open it, I get a white with
nothing in it.  However, the software is obviously running because it is
still downloading updates and performing its scheduled virus scan.

3 -- System restore.  Same as McAfee -- clicking it open only produces a
blank white space.

4 -- IE 6.  Various menus and toggle buttons would not show up.  I tried
downloading IE 7 and that loads and opens but it shows Add-Ons disabled
despite the fact that they appear to be enabled.  Same problem however --
toggles and drop-down menus are missing.  I had to switch to Firefox and that
works fine.

Any ideas?  I'm tearing my hair out.

Thanks in advance!

What do you mean you fixed the registry problem?

Have you tried to restore to a previous restore point?

From the sounds of it, your registry is missing entries required by the
varoius applications to function properly. depending on how extensive the
corruption is, you may just be better off with a reinstall of the o/s. This
will probably save you even more headaches down the road.

cheers,
james

I followed the instructions here:  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307545/

That's the last part of the instructions, so yes.

Ugh.  Not what I wanted to hear, James, not that I wasn't expecting that.
Thanks -- I guess I know what I'm doing next weekend.

Best regards,
Ann
