I am running Windows XP Media Center Edition, Version 2002, Service Pack 1.
Media Center is 2004, Version 5.1.2600.1387. I had been able to record basic
cable TV programs with no problem. I switched to digital cable with a cable
box. I went through the Setup procedure. It is using channel 3 for the
signal. The only problem during setup was “Media Center cannot detect either
the IR control cable or the remote sensor.” I elected to skip that step. The

failure. (Error code: 774)". Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks,

Thanks, Doug. I did not have the IR Emitter hooked up. I thought all I
needed was the IR Receiver. I went through the Set-up again and I can now
schedule recordings. But...
When I try to use Click to DVD (Version 2.4.12.14071), during conversion I
get an error "Cannot convert the captured files because of an error". I
couldn't find any other information. When I try to view the file with Media
Player (Version 10.00.00.04448) I get ,"You are not allowed to open this
file. Contact the content provider for further assistance." More Information
gives
"C00D0BC1: Cannot perform the requested action
Windows Media Player cannot perform the requested action. You might
encounter this error message for one of the following reasons:
• The license associated with the file does not allow this action.
• You are trying to play a .dvr-ms file that is protected. The Personal
Video Recorder (PVR) in Windows XP Media Center Edition, for example, might
create such files if the content provider designated the content as
protected. A protected .dvr-ms file can only be played on the computer on
which it was recorded."
I can convert programs I recorded prior to setting up digital. Any thoughts
here?
Thanks,
Paul

If the program is marked as copy protected, there's nothing you can do. It
won't play in anything but Media Center, and can't be burned to DVD.

Oh, well. Not what I was hoping for but what I was coming to expect. And
you are right. I can play the movies on my PC using Media Center. So, can I
play the movies on my TV through Media Center by connecting my PC to the TV?
I can look up how to do it. And I wonder if all of the movies will be copy
protected? Something for me to play with. Not exactly what I was hoping for
when I signed up for digital, but doable.
Thank you for your quick and helpful responses.
Thanks,
Paul

As a general rule, here in my area anyway (on Comcast) not much is
protected. Usually HBO stuff. And yes, you should be able to play almost
anything through your TV, since nothing over a set top box is HD, HDCP
shouldn't become an issue.
