I ran System File Checker and confirmed I've got some corrupted system files.
However, SFC asks for my Windows XP Professional CD #2, which I don't have.
My PC came with MCE installed. It does have a hidden partition for system
recovery.
I searched through all the knowledge bases I can think of, but have not
found a way to fix my system problem without reloading XP MCE.
1. Can I fix the files without reloading Windows?
2. If I reload Windows, how can I do it without losing all my programs. Yes,
I can reload them too, but that's such a pain.

If you have HP XP Media Center Edition,
You have to create 3 recovery disks from Start, All Programs, PC Help &
Tools.
Click - HP PC Recovery CD-DVD Creator
This will give you a complete restore to factory defaults.
Good Luck,
Jerry

Doesn't solve his problem though. He wants a non-destructive solution.
