The only way I could get it to work was by upgrading to cable.
Charter's slowest speed option is twenty dollars, my dialup was
eleven.

Without knowing what you have tried, it's hard to give advise that is not
repetitive.
However, one common thing to check, make sure your system date/time, time
zone, and DST settings are correct. That is a common cause of that error --
just having the clock showing the correct, but for the wrong time zone will
cause problems.

Thank you for the reply however the check of system Date, Time, Time zone etc
was one of the first things that was checked when I first experienced this
problem.
I have tried everything I have found posted or was suggested to me but none
of the suggestions resolves this issue. As I had said I have spent many, many
hours with HP techs trying to resolve this and I had gone so far as to
completely reinstall the operating system which was a suggestion by one of
the HP techs. I cannot beleive that Microsoft does not have ot cannot come up
with a solution to this problem! The guide had been working perfectly for 3
years until about 2 months ago when it quit downloading data. Can someone
please help me with this.

I had the same problem and I decided the cause was with the phone
company or the ISP, not with my, HP, system. I switched to cable,
Charter, and haven't had a problem since. If you can, upgrade to a
higher speed connection. The cost for me was an additional nine
dollars per month. It's not right, but it's easier than fighting
city hall.

We've heard that before here. Problems with dialup connection taking too
long for the download and MCE losing the connection.
Know anybody with cable/DSL at their house, where you could haul your system
and test the theory? (I know it would be a pain, but it would eliminate the
possibilty.)
