Is it possible that the Abit KX7-333 motherboard requires memory chips to
be installed in pairs? I do not understand why I have been unable to add
a 1 gig stick to my current pair of 256M sticks, or even just use the 1
gig stick alone. All are PC2700. I'll buy another 1 gig stick if
necessary (could I use a faster stick - PC2700 isn't so easy to find any
longer?) We've tried changing jumpers 1 and 2 when changing the memory
amounts - same result.
It should not be so difficult to add memory. :-(

KT333 was in general, fairly picky about memory at
166MHz/PC2700 memory bus speed. Some boards wouldn't even
run 2 x 512MB modules.

Does the system POST?

You don't need PC2700 memory, PC3200 is backwards
compatible. The PC(nnnn) naming does not necessarily mean
"run it at that speed", it means "this is the fastest we
guarantee it should run stable". Thus, in general you are
as well off buying PC3200 instead, AND if the PC2700 you
bought was essentially the same module that would've been
labeled as CAS2.5/PC3200, but was instead programmed to be
CAS2.0/PC2700, that could be part of the problem, that KT333
with multiple larger modules just can't run stable at 166MHz
memory bus speed in most cases.
We'd need more details of the specifics mentioned above, I
only covered a few general issues which may not apply.
I suggest that your attempt be to first use only 1 or 2
modules, either the one x 1GB, or a pair of 512MB modules...
not because they're a pair per se, just to get 1GB of memory
while only using 2 modules. I'm suggesting that you "might"
have to abandon both of the 256MB modules if you want more
than 756MB total memory, and to get 756MB, leave one 256MB
in and get a 512MB instead of the 1GB. This may not apply
if it is stable at the lower memory bus speed or relaxed
timings. What are the memory timing ratings for each of
your modules?
You might also check Abit's website for a bios that
addresses memory compatibility... and flash it if you find
one, but of course only with the system in the last know
stable configuration to avoid flashing mishaps.

So much for that thought.
Doesn't POST. Haven't run any tests. I believe the bios has optopms for
voltage and timing.
Athlon 2600+ CPU.
I'll check the settings.
